1. Introduction / Orientation
"The Japanese Educational Challenge" And Reference Books By Shinichi Suzuki
Where to start? What is the Suzuki Method all about? Well, it can be said that Suzuki's books, "Ability Development From Age Zero" and "Nurtured by Love", are defining works for the Suzuki Method. These books are commonly recommended as an introduction to his approach. They are, indeed, indispensable reading materials for teachers and parents, alike. Students should read these, too. Selected portions (anecdotes and simply stated principles) can be read to younger students who don't yet read.
Suzuki's writings are reference materials, in the sense that there is a continued benefit from reviewing them from time to time. As the teacher, parent, and student gain experience through study, Suzuki's writings take on new meaning. New ways of applying his ideas become more apparent, and his point of view becomes clearer.
As a preface to reading Suzuki's writings, it should be noted that most Westerners will find very many of his ideas and his expression of these ideas to be somewhat quaint. The essential meaning of his thoughts can easily get obscured. Suzuki's "Japanese" style of thought and writing can be a barrier to getting the full benefit of what he has to offer. Having an appreciation of the conventions of Japanese thought and style can greatly enhance the readers understanding of Suzuki's ideas as they are expressed in his writings.
A VALUABLE TIP FOR SUZUKI NEOPHYTES AND VETERANS!
For the reasons stated above, a "translation" from the English can be valuable. Here is a tip that will benefit both the seasoned professional teacher as well as those who are new to the Suzuki Method: I strongly recommend, and have included at the top of reference material list found on this page, the remarkable book, "The Japanese Educational Challenge" by Merry White. While the Suzuki Method is not the subject of White's book and its title does not adequately express its scope or value, White's work gives the reader a perspective that provides context for a substantially increased understanding of what Suzuki is saying. "The Japanese Educational Challenge" is essential reading for both parents and teachers. If you have read Suzuki's work, you will never read Suzuki's writings in the same way again.
After reading "The Japanese Educational Challenge", Suzuki's books, "Ability Development From Age Zero" followed by "Nurtured by Love", should be read. I agree with those who suggest that those two books are perhaps the best introductory material, written by Suzuki, himself.
Evelyn Hermann's excellent book, "Suzuki the Man & His Philosophy", is included in this section, because the last half is, in effect, an important, authentic book by Suzuki. The first part of the book, written by Hermann, is one of the best biographies of Suzuki, while the portion written by Suzuki contains a number of his violin teaching points. Every Suzuki violin teacher should read and study this book.
